Functional annotation and enrichment analysis have been widely used in bioinformatics of proteomics research.
Functional annotation is the process of attaching biological information to a gene or protein sequence. Today, the annotation system has added more information on biological functions, which allows manual annotation to distinguish genes or proteins from the same annotation. Computational annotation methods for characterizing genes and proteins from sequenced genome sequences have become increasingly important.
Functional enrichment analysis refers to the enrichment analysis of a gene set. The hypergeometric distribution algorithm is used to obtain the gene enrichment function in the gene set. Enrichment analysis of gene functions is expected to discover important biological pathways in biological processes, thereby revealing and helping to understand the basic molecular mechanisms of biological processes.
This infographic briefly introduces several methods for functional annotation and enrichment, including GO annotation analysis, GO enrichment analysis, KEGG annotation analysis, KEGG enrichment analysis, and COG annotation analysis.
