Recently, polioviruses were detected in wastewater samples across various counties in New York, suggesting a community spread among unvaccinated groups. Polio, or poliomyelitis, is a disease caused by the poliovirus. There are three serotypes of polioviruses, namely wild poliovirus types 1, 2, and 3. Polio is a contagious disease that spreads from person to person and can infect one's spinal cord, causing paralysis.
