Of Mitochondria and Stiff Hearts
Hypertrophic
cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the leading cause of sudden cardiac death in the 5–15
age bracket. HCM primarily occurs because mutations in cardiac sarcomeres
render the heart stiff and overactive. New work using a novel in vitro model of
cardiac stiffening establishes an intriguing link between L-type calcium
channels and mitochondria.
